The neuconnect interconnector
Project Overview
NeuConnect will create the first direct electricity link between Great Britain and Germany, allowing up to 1.4GW of electricity to flow in either direction between both countries.
NeuConnect will construct new converter stations on the Isle of Grain in Kent, England and the Wilhelmshaven region in Lower Saxony, northern Germany, connected by subsea cables travelling through British, Dutch and German waters.
NeuConnect Britain Ltd. based in London, is responsible for all aspects of the project in the UK (as well as construction works in Dutch waters), with NeuConnect Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG, based in Wilhelmshaven, responsible for all aspects of the project in Germany.
The role of interconnectors
Interconnectors are power lines that create important new links between the energy networks of different countries, allowing a safe, secure and affordable energy supply to cross geographical boundaries.
Many countries, including Germany and Great Britain, have identified a long-term need for interconnectors as they help to integrate energy markets, increase competition and security of supply, and deliver value for money for consumers.
NeuConnect’s investors
NeuConnect is being developed by an experienced global consortium that includes Meridiam, Allianz Capital Partners on behalf of Allianz Group, Kansai Electric Power and TEPCO, and is backed by some of the world’s largest banks and financial institutions.
The key partners bring a proven track record in delivering large-scale energy infrastructure, creating a team with significant experience and expertise in interconnector projects. In addition, the key partners’ investment approach is aligned to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), helping to ensure that NeuConnect is being delivered to the highest sustainability standards.
Lead-investor Meridiam is founded on an ethos of taking a long-term approach to its investments, meaning the NeuConnect project will further benefit from Meridiam’s long-term commitment to invest in, develop and manage the asset over 25 years and beyond.
