Construction

NeuConnect is committed to engaging, listening to, and informing key audiences at each stage through the construction and operation of the project.

Timeline of upcoming works in the UK:

2023
– Horizontal directional drilling begins – Horizontal direction drilling (HDD) is a trenchless method used to enable the installation of cables underground without disturbing the surface. The drill enters the ground at one end of the designated bore path, runs parallel to the surface, and exits it at the other end. The cable is then pulled through the borehole. We will use HDD for a short distance at the landfall site, where the subsea cables transition to the onshore underground cables. We will use HDD to minimise impact on the surface and to the local environment.
– Completion of archaeological investigations on Grain
– HDD works in UK complete; earthworks begin to prepare converter station site

2024
– Manufacture of UK onshore cabling; offshore cable installation starts; piling works start on site of UK converter station
– UK converter station construction begins

2025
– Start of UK onshore cabling installation

2026
– UK onshore cable installation complete
– Start of construction and installation of UK substation

2027
– Offshore cable installation completed; system-wide testing begins
– Start of trial operations

2028
– NeuConnect enters commercial operations

Environmental Information

As part of the development of plans for the NeuConnect Interconnector, we have undertaken a number of environmental studies, including an Environmental Impact Assessment.

The purpose of the Environmental Impact Assessment is to understand:

  • the existing environmental conditions of the area in which NeuConnect would be built and operated
  • the likely significant environmental effects that could occur during construction and operation of NeuConnect
  • the proposed mitigation measures that NeuConnect will implement during construction and operation.

In this section of our website you can access non-technical summaries of the Environmental Statements that have been prepared for the GB, DE and NL elements of the project.

Additionally, we have produced a Climate Change Risk Assessment, which you can access by clicking here.

ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION – GB

NeuConnect has undertaken environmental assessments as part of developing plans for the GB onshore and offshore elements of the project.
